Mentoring@Purdue to hold workshops this week
Angela Byars-Winston, a vocational psychologist and expert on cultural influences on academic and career development, will lead two workshops Wednesday and Thursday (March 9-10) presented by Mentoring@Purdue, a program in the College of Agriculture. The workshops are open to all disciplines at Purdue.
The events constitute Mentoring@Purdue's fourth annual Invited Lecture Series. Byars-Winston is a visiting professor at the University of Pretoria's Gordon Institute of Business Science and a fellow of the American Psychological Association. Byars-Winston was recognized with an Outstanding Woman of Color Award from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2014 and received a Champion of Change Award from the White House in 2011.
The events and primary intended audience are:
* Wednesday: "Dialogue and Discussion with Dr. Angela Byars-Winston," which will be geared toward graduate students, will be held 5-6 p.m. Wednesday at the Purdue Graduate Student Center, Room 105. The workshop will highlight Byars-Winston’s research, which focuses on factors that influence STEM careers for racial/ethnic minorities. She also will discuss strategies for resolving conflict in mentoring relationships and will share her own personal journey to the professoriate.
* Thursday: "Mentoring NextGen Scientists and Researchers: What's Race Got to Do With It?," which will be geared toward faculty and staff, will be held at 10:30-11:30 a.m. Thursday in Pfendler Hall, Deans Auditorium (Room 241). The workshop will focus on the role of ethnic/racial cultural diversity in STEM mentoring relationships.
