Reminder: Reportable Outside Activities and Conflict of Interest Report

Faculty and staff are reminded that they are required to report outside activities and financial conflicts of interest in accordance with University policy. The policies on Conflicts of Commitment and Reportable Outside Activities (III.B.1) and Individual Financial Conflicts of Interest (III.B.2) are available on the University Policies website.

All exempt faculty and staff, whether part-time or full-time, are required to report and obtain approval before they engage in any Reportable Outside Activities. In some situations, members of the clerical and service staff must also report outside activities. At the beginning of each fiscal year, employees also must report all activities in which they continue to participate, even if previous approval was granted. If an individual completed a form for activities in the 2015-16 fiscal year, that information will prepopulate the 2016-17 disclosure form and may be revised as necessary. The online system is located on the Employee Portal, on the Conflicts page of the website of the Office of the Vice President for Ethics and Compliance, and in Conflicts of Commitment and Reportable Outside Activities under the heading, “Related Documents, Forms and Tools.”

In general, the financial affairs and relationships of all University faculty and staff as well as those of their dependents are to be conducted in a manner that does not interfere with or improperly influence their duties as employees of the University. The Conflict of Interest Disclosure Statement may be completed online and signed electronically or printed and signed. A link to the form is provided on the Conflicts page of the website of the Office of the Vice President for Ethics and Compliance and in Individual Financial Conflicts of Interest under the heading, “Related Documents, Forms and Tools.”

To assist faculty and staff in determining what needs to be disclosed and approved, the Office of the Vice President for Ethics and Compliance has provided a list of frequently asked questions on the Conflicts page of its website. Faculty and staff are encouraged to talk with their unit head if they have specific questions or refer to the contacts section of each policy for a list of campus-specific phone numbers and e-mail addresses.

The Office of the Executive Vice President for Research and Partnerships has developed many resources for faculty seeking information about disclosure and management of research and entrepreneurship related financial interests. A new decision tree has been added to the website to assist with the disclosure process.
