CIE to offer spring workshops, course on college teaching

Purdue instructors, postdocs, graduate students and staff can enhance their teaching skills, exchange ideas with colleagues and get practical hints on their craft from some of the campus's award-winning professors in workshops offered by the Center for Instructional Excellence.

Beginning Jan. 24, the College Teaching Workshop 1 (CTW 1) series on the basics of teaching at Purdue will be offered at 10:30-11:45 a.m. Tuesdays in Hicks Undergraduate Library, Room B853. Topics will include how to build rapport with students, write learning outcomes and objectives, encourage active and experiential learning, give effective instructional presentations, design assessments, provide feedback and grade, foster academic integrity, and construct a course plan and syllabus that support an effective learning environment.

A special two-hour micro-teaching session begins at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 28 in Heavilon Hall. Participants may register for single workshops or for the series of 10 as a whole.

For graduate students, participation in the workshops counts toward the Graduate Teacher Certificate program sponsored by the Purdue Teaching Academy. Graduate students interested in completing a certificate should click on the “Enroll” link on the website to receive details.

Graduate students who can attend all the sessions may earn one course credit by registering for EDCI 589: College Teaching Workshops, which begins Tuesday (Jan. 17). Graduate students who enroll in the course, attend at least nine of the 10 CTW 1 sessions, and complete assignments related to the workshop content will earn credit as a pass/fail grade. Students can register for the EDCI 589 course online through Purdue's course enrollment website. Interested graduate students who have questions should email Dan Guberman at dguberma@purdue.edu.

More information and registration for each of the CTW 1 sessions can be found at www.purdue.edu/cie/workshops/workshops1.html.
