Honors College, Equity and Diversity Committee to hold webinar on responding to racist messages on campus

The Honors College and Purdue University Senate's Equity and Diversity Committee are holding a webinar on "Racist Messages on Campus: Respond, Recover and Rebuild from Vandalism, Symbols and Slurs" at 2-3:30 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 23) in Wilmeth Active Learning Center, Room 3087.

The webinar, which is open to students, faculty and staff, will feature the Rev. Jamie Washington, president and founder of the Washington Consulting Group, president and co-founder of the Social Justice Training Institute, and vice president and president-elect of the American College Personnel Association.

From the webinar website: Colleges continue to face race-related posters and graffiti on college campuses across the nation. Racist slurs, symbols and threats written on walls, student name tags and residence hall doors have inflamed students and administrators on a number of campuses, as have posters advertising the white nationalist movement. Social media also has seen its share of tweets and posts demonstrating discrimination and hate.

In this webinar, participants will gain a framework for examining campus bigotry, learn effective tools for educating others on how they can be engaged on topics of social justice and learn how to respond in today's age of transparency, both quickly and assertively.
