David Ebert, Silicon Valley Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue, will serve as interim director of Discovery Park's Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security, effective Nov. 1.

CERIAS is widely considered as one of the world's leading centers for research and education in areas of information security that are crucial to the protection of critical computing and communication infrastructure. A multifaceted approach combines technical strength with ethical, legal, educational, economic, linguistic and communication expertise to create a cross-disciplinary team composed of six colleges and more than 20 departments across the Purdue campus.

Ebert joined Purdue in December 2000, and performs research in visual analytics, data science, novel visualization techniques, volume rendering, information visualization, and procedural abstraction of complex, massive data. He has been very active in the visualization community, teaching courses, presenting papers, and co-chairing many conference program committees. Ebert is also a faculty director of Purdue's Visual Analytics for Command, Control, and Interoperability Environments center, known as VACCINE, a Department of Homeland Security emeritus center of excellence. Ebert founded the CERIAS-affiliated VACCINE in 2009 and has been principal investigator since its inception.

VACCINE creates methods, tools, and applications to analyze and manage vast amounts of information for all mission areas of homeland security in the most efficient manner. The center boasts an integrated program of research, education, and outreach; collaboration with 27 domestic and international universities; an extensive end-user community; transitioned technology that moves tools from the research lab to local, statewide, and national use; and an educational program that effectively reaches the next generation of homeland security professionals. VACCINE has been the recipient of more than $24 million in funding from DHS to date.

Among its many research areas, VACCINE created a platform that helped first responders in hurricane-stricken areas monitor social media streams to locate people in need and initiate response or rescue.  Called SMART (Social Media Analytics and Reporting Tool), the platform provides a visual display that shows from where user-defined keywords are originating and what issues the social media users are having. The platform was also used to help during the deadly wildfires in California earlier this year.
