Assistant professors invited to apply for research project grants from Butler Center

The Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Leadership Excellence is calling for proposals for a research project grant for assistant professors. This fellowship is made possible through funds from the new Ketan and Tanuja Sheth Family Endowment and the Butler Center. The deadline for applications has been extended to midnight March 31.

The research project award recognizes a tenured assistant professor or clinical assistant professor who plans to undertake a project highlighting and/or benefiting women in academe. This year, projects focused on intersectionality (intersections of gender and/or race and/or ethnicity, and/or class, and/or nationality, and/or sexuality and/or other differences) will be preferred. Aimed at furthering the mission of the Butler Center, this award supports the work of an individual (or individuals) interested in developing leadership capacity of women, advancing inclusion and representation of women in academic decision-making, or some similar focus.

As the title of the award implies, there is a research component required, though data for the research may be through one or more different sources (e.g., survey, interviews, focus group discussions, documents, secondary sources, experiments, etc.).

The principal investigator must be a tenure-track assistant professor or clinical assistant professor. Additional faculty members, if any, on the proposal may be of any rank. A maximum of $3,000 is available for making one or two awards.

Individual and team submissions are accepted. An application packet must include the following:

  • Proposals should be described in a maximum of three pages (excluding title page and references) single-spaced in 12-point font. It must include the following details:
    • Project goals and significance.
    • Plan to gather/obtain and analyze data.
    • Budget – Funding needed to conduct the project (as detailed as possible). The funds cannot be used for salary or salary supplements.
    • Timeline for project.
    • Brief explanation of how the project supports the mission of the Butler Center and clear outcomes.
  • A two-page CV for the PI and any additional faculty should be included in the proposal (not needed for research assistants).

The application packet should be submitted online as a single PDF. The Butler Center will receive and review applications and recommend candidates for selection to the Purdue Research Foundation. PRF will review the Butler Center’s recommendations and has sole decision-making authority with respect to each grant award based on available revenue and PRF’s assessment of those recommendations. Consistent with the mission of the Butler Center, PRF’s selection will give preference to projects that are headed by primary investigators who are women assistant professors.

The grant awardee(s) will receive funding to conduct and complete their projects in one year. A report on the project and findings will have to be submitted to the Butler Center at the end of the one-year project period.

For more information, contact the Butler Center at butlercenter@purdue.edu.The grant awardee(s) will be recognized at the Butler Center’s end-of-the-year reception on April 25.
