Michael Pollan, author of best-selling books, has made a career exploring what humans put in their bodies, and now he is pushing past food to ask whether psychedelics have value beyond their countercultural history. His Q&A appearance in Purdue’s Ideas Festival will consider the safety and efficacy of psychedelics as some scientists are looking at them for relieving depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and addiction. The exhibition "Apollo 11 in the Archives: Selections from the Neil A. Armstrong Papers" will open, celebrating 50 years since the first moon landing and 150 years of Purdue. March 18-Aug. 16. “Ever True: 150 Years of Giant Leaps at Purdue University,” a book preview talk by author John Norberg, will whet appetites for this forthcoming volume of the same name. 6:30 p.m. STEW, Fowler Hall. Website | Free but registration required

“What If Psychedelics Can Heal?” is the talk that Michael Pollan, a best-selling author on such substances and food, will bring. This is an event in the "Health, Longevity and Quality of Life" theme of the Ideas Festival, the centerpiece of Purdue's yearlong Giant Leaps Sesquicentennial Campaign. Q&A session at 6 p.m. in STEW, Fowler Hall, led Rhonda Phillips, interim dean of Purdue University Libraries and School of Information Studies, the lead sponsor. Katharine Hayhoe, a renowned climate scientist, will present “Science in a Fact-Free World: What IF Society Trusted Scientists.” Hayhoe was listed by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world, among other public recognitions. 7:30-9 p.m. STEW, Fowler Hall. This event is a part of Purdue’s Ideas Festival, the centerpiece of Purdue’s Giant Leaps Sesquicentennial Campaign, addressing the IF theme “Toward a Sustainable Economy & Planet.” Article | Seat reservations recommended
