President Mitch Daniels honored Purdue custodian Carol Burke with the One Brick Higher Award on Tuesday (April 16) during a quarterly awards reception for Physical Facilities staff for her key role in ensuring that a student received vital assistance during a time of need.

The One Brick Higher Award is a special honor at Purdue. It is presented to faculty, staff and students who go beyond the requirements of their role to improve the lives of those around them, increase the effectiveness of the workplace and/or prevent or solve problems. It is given to those who undertake their work with extra vitality, extra care, extra creativity and extraordinary effort.

In mid-February, while emptying trash bins during her typical overnight shift, Carol found a note indicating a student was in crisis needing immediate intervention. Rather than disregard the warning sign, Carol did the right thing — she took action to ensure that the student received critical help and support by informing her supervisor of the situation.

“Carol went above and beyond her usual duties to care for a student in need. Her caring concern for another member of the Purdue community is an extraordinary example of what makes Boilermakers so special,” Daniels said.
