Purdue Month of Service to provide volunteer opportunities

During the month of September, Boilermakers will have the opportunity to help strengthen their community by volunteering in the Purdue Month of Service.

On the Purdue West Lafayette campus and in clubs, networks and affinity groups worldwide, Boilermakers will unite to move the world forward through volunteering.

The United Way of Greater Lafayette and Purdue Alumni Association have partnered to increase volunteerism in Greater Lafayette. More than a hundred volunteer opportunities with nonprofit organizations ranging from health and human services to environmental and animal services are available to Purdue student, faculty and staff teams. Alumni are encouraged to coordinate their own service projects in their respective communities and serve with other Boilermakers in clubs and networks across the globe. Volunteer opportunities can be found at https://www.purduealumni.org/month-of-service/.

Incentives to volunteering: As an incentive, anyone who volunteers up to four hours and reports their time will receive a complimentary Basic Membership in the Purdue Alumni Association, which gives access to member-only events and discounts on Purdue merchandise. #PurdueServes T-shirts are also available in a limited quantity.

Purdue faculty, staff and students wanting to volunteer during working hours can do so at their supervisor’s discretion.

One example of a local volunteering opportunity is the Read to Succeed program, a initiative of Greater Lafayette Commerce and the United Way that also partners with Purdue. The program continues to welcome Purdue volunteers throughout the year.

Read to Succeed contributes to local schools' efforts to boost reading skills and have students reading at grade level by grade three. Purdue faculty, staff and students wanting to volunteer can donate an hour of time in paid status per week to the program, at their supervisor’s discretion.

Anyone interested in participating in Read to Succeed should contact Allison Hackman from United Way of Greater Lafayette, 765-742-9077 ext. 233 or ahackman@uw.lafayette.in.us.
