License plate recognition software expanding to gated parking garages beginning Monday

Purdue Parking and Transportation Services will implement license plate recognition at the Grant Street and Harrison Street parking garages as of Monday (Dec. 9). Gate access using this software was tested in November.

As vehicles approach the stop arm to enter or exit either garage, cameras should automatically read the license plates of registered “A” and “Reserved” permit holders and open the gate without requiring the use of physical garage access cards.

“A” and “Reserved” permit holders should retain their physical garage access cards and have them available for special circumstances when parking at these locations. In some instances when the cameras are unable to read the license plate – including software outages or when snow, dirt or debris is covering a license plate and obstructing the view – a garage access card will be required to enter or exit.

Hourly paid parking will continue to be offered at both gated garages for visitors and for those who do not have an “A” or “Reserved” parking permit.
