Purdue Science K-12 Outreach now offering podcast

The Purdue Science K-12 Outreach program has created a podcast, the “Superheroes of Science,” which allows listeners to learn about current science research and trends in science education.

The podcast was developed as a resource for K-12 science teachers and their students.

Each episode highlights research done in various fields of science or science education and allows listeners to learn how the scientists got started in their fields.

Solid-state chemistry, geosciences and dating cave deposits, computer science educations, electrocatalysis, severe weather, biology education and physics have all been discussed in the current season of “Superheroes of Science.”

“Beginning the podcast at Purdue, it made sense to begin with interviewing faculty members who we work with here on campus,” said Sarah Nern, K-12 outreach coordinator in the Department of Chemistry. “We look forward to expanding our guest list to include scientists from across the nation, including Purdue alumni working in scientific fields.  It’s our hope that interviewing a broad group of scientific experts will help K-12 teachers and their students learn more about career opportunities, which is an issue that has recently been spotlighted in schools.”

Published episodes range from 25 to 36 minutes. Eight episodes have been released as of the end of September. New episodes are released every Monday.

The podcast is hosted by Nern and Steven Smith, K-12 outreach coordinator in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences.

“Superheroes of Science” is available on most major platforms including iTunes, Google Play, Podbean, Stitcher, Blubrry and Libsyn.
