Op-ed writing workshop being offered for faculty

The Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Leadership Excellence in partnership with the Center for the Environment and Purdue Policy Research Institute is offering an op-ed writing workshop at 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Feb. 10.

Conducted by the OpEd Project, the highly interactive, energetic workshop will explore:

  • The source of credibility and how to establish it.
  • Ways to present ideas quickly and powerfully under pressure.
  • The components of powerful, evidence-based argument.
  • The difference between being “right” and being effective.
  • Strategies for making a greater impact, including how to escape a pigeonhole, how to preach beyond the choir, and the value of seeing your argument as part of a bigger picture — and yourself as part of a larger public conversation.

In addition, the workshop will take participants through exercises designed to expand the way they think about their particular expertise, help them “translate” niche ideas raised during the workshop into large themes and explore pitching. Participants leave the workshop with a draft outline of an op-ed in hand. Participants will have ongoing access to OpEd Project resources, events and mentors.

There is an internal application process due to the limited number of seats available. The deadline for applications is 9 a.m. Jan. 24. Interested participants are required to complete a short online application here.

Only complete applications will be considered; other supporting papers will not be reviewed. Applications are accepted in the online application format only. Emailed or printed applications or letters will not be accepted.

Because the organizers are incurring a substantial expense to host this workshop free of charge to participants, it is important that applicants know that, if selected, they can and will attend the entire workshop.
