PPRI, Butler Center to hold second conversation on social justice in higher education on Tuesday

The Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) and Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Leadership Excellence are inviting faculty, staff and students to the “Courageous Conversations: Social Justice in Higher Education, Part 2” virtual discussion at noon-1:30 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 23). This session will build on discussion from Part 1, though participation in Part 1 is not required.

On Feb. 16, Part 1's discussion identified a number of issues related to the topic. Part 2 aims to structure the approach for next steps -- moving discussion to action and discovery to impact. Various stakeholders and experts will address questions such as: What are the emergent issues? How do different sectors of society value addressing these topics? How have current policies or lack of policy affected these issues?

This action-focused working session will aim to connect the key issues covered in Part 1 and identify what data is needed to inform change. Part 2's discussion will result in a summary report and follow on activities to address social justice issues in higher education. A literature review and policy analysis will be included in the discussion summary to assist in determining a path forward. PPRI will take the lead in the preparation of the summary report and analysis in collaboration with the Butler Center.

The speakers for this session are:

  • Theon Hill, associate professor of communication, Wheaton College.
  • Mohan Dutta, dean’s chair in communication, Massey University.
  • Paaige Turner, dean of the college of communication, Ball State University.
  • Morgan Donatelli-Bow, Indiana Youth Services Association.
  • Mariela Machado, program manager of operations at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and Engineering for Change.

Registration is required and should be completed online. For more information, contact ppri@purdue.edu.
