Purdue to achieve 1869 Tree Planting Master Plan this fiscal year

As Purdue’s 1869 Tree Planting Master Plan is set to conclude by fiscal year 2025, the university is on track to achieve the goals outlined in the plan. 

The 1869 Tree Planting Master Plan was designed to create and maintain vibrant spaces and healthy ecosystems. It is part of the 2020 Physical Facilities Sustainability Master Plan and calls for a total of 3,738 trees to be planted by fiscal year 2025. The total number of trees was determined by doubling 1,869, representing the year Purdue was founded. 

In the last four fiscal years, the university has surpassed the original 1,869 goal with 3,156 trees planted. Phil Richey, Grounds director, says the university is on track to achieve the doubled target this summer when fiscal year 2024 ends.

“Our department has worked countless hours to ensure we remain on track to achieve the goals of the 1869 Tree Planting Master Plan,” Richey said. “We have been very strategic with planting trees that provide a healthy, diverse tree canopy in locations across campus, and we are thrilled to see those efforts pay off as the plan wraps up.”

For the last major tree planting of the plan, the Grounds department is working with the Purdue for Life Foundation on the April 26 Day of Service. The event will also highlight the 15th consecutive year of Purdue receiving the Tree Campus USA award. Volunteers will help plant more than 250 trees at Horticulture Park. Tony Gillund, director of Sustainability, says these events are a large reason the university will be able to achieve the goals outlined in the plan.

“We have been very fortunate to collaborate with such incredible campus partners in recent years,” Gillund said. “Partnering with various groups allows even more volunteers to make their mark on campus for years to come. We are grateful for the opportunities that will help us accomplish such a milestone.”
