Renee Thomas has been selected as the 2024 recipient of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission’s Achievement in Education Award. Thomas, associate vice provost for diversity, inclusion and belonging, and former director of Purdue’s Black Cultural Center, will receive the award at the Governor’s Reception during Indiana Black Expo’s 53rd Summer Celebration.

“You have demonstrated compassion, leadership and a commitment to ensuring all future generations have access to high-quality education,” ICRC Executive Director Greg Wilson stated in a congratulatory letter.

The Governor’s Reception, to be held Tuesday (June 25) at 2:30 p.m. in the Indiana Convention Center, 100 S. Capitol Ave., in the 500 Ballroom, is free and open to the public. Thomas will receive the award from Aaryn Eady, minority business initiative director of the Indiana Economic Development Corp., on behalf of Gov. Eric Holcomb.

“During her time at Purdue, Renee Thomas has distinguished herself as a student-centered leader with an eye for meaningful community engagement,” said John Gates, vice provost for diversity, inclusion and belonging. “As director, she led the Black Cultural Center to national renown for their performing arts ensembles and research tours. Today she is guiding outreach efforts that acknowledge both the past and the future of the community in which Purdue University in Indianapolis is located. We are thrilled to celebrate her accomplishments as she receives this important honor in our state.”
