Members of the campus community in Indianapolis encouraged to opt in for emergency text notifications

With Purdue’s expansion to Indianapolis, those working and living at that location are encouraged to sign up for emergency text notifications.

The text messages are part of PurdueALERT — the university’s emergency notification system. The system is comprised of multiple communication methods to help notify the campus community in the event of an emergency. Those methods also include outdoor all-hazards sirens, emails and social platform X (@purdueemergency).

Those working and living on campus in Indianapolis may also opt in for emergency texts for the campus in West Lafayette. Those working and living on the West Lafayette campus may also opt in to receive messages for the campus in Indianapolis.

“We understand that some individuals may split their time between cities as Indianapolis is an extension of the West Lafayette campus,” said Jefferson Howells, director of Emergency Preparedness. “It is critical for those individuals to stay in the know and be prepared as messaging will be available for both campuses.”

A test of the PurdueALERT system, including sending text messages and sounding the outdoor sirens (West Lafayette only), will take place during Boiler Gold Rush in August. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to sign up for texts before then to ensure they are receiving messages.

The Office of Emergency Preparedness is part of the Administrative Operations organization. The organization supports the university by providing safe, reliable and transformative services. Making sure the campus community is signed up for emergency notifications and knows how to respond in the event of an actual emergency is just one of the ways the organization helps power Purdue.
