Appointments, honors and activities
• Appointments and promotions:
- Frank Dooley has been promoted to senior vice provost for teaching and learning, effective June 1. The change encompasses Dooley's recently announced new role as lead to the Purdue team that will oversee academic and support functions for the public university resulting from the Kaplan acquisition. Dooley will continue to be responsible for all areas that currently report to the vice provost for teaching and learning.
- Kristin Krzic has been appointed the new program administrator for the Asian-American and Asian Resource and Cultural Center. Krzic will be the first program administrator for the center, which organizes academic, social and cultural events. Krzic will be responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating programs that enhance the holistic international student experience. She will begin in the role on July 31.
- Kristi Mickle has been named senior director, business management, and Kathy Thomason has been named senior director, comptroller. For the past several months, both have held similar roles in interim capacities. Mickle has served with distinction in the business management organization throughout her 22-year career at Purdue. Thomason has served as assistant comptroller for the last three and a half years. Prior to joining Purdue, Thomason was in public accounting for 18 years. Both appointments are effective June 1.
-Baraka Corley was selected as the new director of Horizons, Purdue’s long-standing TRIO Student Support Services program. The Federal TRIO Programs are outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. Corley is currently serving as program and facility manager for Purdue’s Black Cultural Center. He has worked in higher education for 16 years and has an extensive background with non-traditional student populations, summer bridge programs, academic advisement, student outreach and retention. He is actively involved in mentoring and consultation for at-risk students in higher educational opportunity programs. Corley will join the Student Success Programs leadership team on June 14.
• Faculty and staff honors:
- Lisa Hopp, dean of Purdue University Northwest's College of Nursing, has received the Distinguished Nurse Alumna Award from the University of Illinois at Chicago's College of Nursing. Hopp earned master's and doctoral degrees at UIC. After work as an intensive care unit nurse, she came to PNW in 1992 and has been known as a mentor to junior faculty and a leader of initiatives in teaching. She played a key role in establishing the Indiana Center for Evidence Based Nursing Practice, a Joanna Briggs Institute International Center of Excellence, at the PNW Hammond campus in 2005. • Student honors:
- Magdalena Madrigal, a Purdue University Northwest student and a native of Naperville, Illinois, recently received the 2017 Verizon Intern of the Year Scholarship in recognition of her efforts during the recent Indiana General Assembly. The $3,000 prize is awarded annually to an outstanding intern in each of the four legislative caucuses, one from each political party from each house. Madrigal, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in business, worked with Sen. Greg Taylor (D-Indianapolis) and Sen. David Niezgodski (D-South Bend) during the 2017 Indiana Senate session. Read more.
