Appointments, honors and activities

Appointments and promotions:

- Professor Preeti M. Sivasankar has been named the head of the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, which is housed in the College of Health and Human Sciences. The appointment is effective July 1. In addition to her appointment in SLHS, she holds courtesy appointments in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering and the Indiana University School of Medicine’s Department of Otolaryngology. She has served as associate head of SLHS since 2017, and was interim head of SLHS during fall 2018. Her research focuses on voice production and laryngeal physiology and is funded by the National Institutes of Health. More information is available online.

Faculty and staff honors:

- Purdue Promise, a four-year experience offering financial assistance and targeted support for low-income Indiana residence, recently received several awards from National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, the largest professional organization for student affairs professionals in the U.S. and Canada. Purdue Promise, part of Student Success Programs, received the following awards: 

* Best Practices in International Higher Education Award for Study Abroad Programming.

* Outstanding Professional Award for Jess Ramsey, senior assistant director for Purdue Promise.

* Excellence (Gold) Award for their category.

* Grand Gold Award, which is the highest honor bestowed by the organization.

Notables:

- Two Purdue staff members co-presented at the 2019 Association of College Unions International conference, which focuses on building campus community through education, advocacy, and the delivery of services. Keara Ludiker, education and employment program specialist at Purdue’s Military Family Research Institute (MFRI), and Jamie Richards, director of Purdue’s Veterans Success Center, presented at the annual event, which took place in Indianapolis. Their presentation, “Student Veterans Organizations and Building Community,” focused on the ways in which veterans’ organizations seek to build community amongst themselves and the campus at large, as well as how staff in higher education can foster community-building opportunities for military and veteran student populations with space and programming.

- Twelve Student Success Programs employees attended the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators conference, which took place in March in Los Angeles. Staff presented six sessions and one poster session, which is the largest presence the department has had at the annual conference. Sessions were:

* Purdue Promise Overview led by Michelle Ashcraft, director of Purdue Promise, and Jess Ramsey, senior assistant director of Purdue Promise.

* Study Abroad for Low-Income Students led by Ashcraft and Ramsey.

* Education to Occupation for Veterans led by Jamie Richards and Taylor Yo.

* Inclusive Practices for Disabled Students led by Kelsey Jordan, Amanda Bell and Ryan McCombs.

* Targeted Professional Development for Low-Income Students led by Ramsey and a colleague from N.C. State.

* Diversity Issues at Predominantly White Institutions led by Aaron Harris and colleague from the University of Miami.
