Krannert event to feature global trade policy expert Doug Irwin

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — U.S. trade policy expert Doug Irwin will speak at the Economic Ideas Forum on April 18.

 “Giant Leaps Series: Economic Ideas Forum Featuring Doug Irwin” is a fireside chat about trade policy and negotiations strategy that will take place 5:30-7 p.m. in Stewart Center’s Fowler Hall. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is preferred. Joining Irwin will be David Hummels, the Dr. Samuel R. Allen Dean of the Krannert School of Management, and David Schoorman, associate dean for executive education and global programs, and professor of management. 

The event is a part of Purdue’s Giant Leaps Series celebrating 150 Years of Giant Leaps. This yearlong celebration is highlighting Purdue’s remarkable history of giant leaps, while focusing on what giant leaps Purdue can take to address the world’s problems. This event also is the keynote for the Purdue University Research Center in Economics’ Economic Ideas Forum, which is sponsored by the Hugh and Judy Pence family.

Irwin, the John French Professor of Economics at Dartmouth College, is a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, and has also served on the staff of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Irwin has written many books and articles on trade policy and economic history, including “Clashing over Commerce: A History of U.S. Trade Policy.” He has over 25 years of undergraduate teaching experience as well as extensive experience in speaking to audiences about the lessons of economic history for current public policy.

The faculty symposia, which also is open to the public with advance registration, will take place from 1:30-5 p.m. in the Krannert School of Management’s Rawls Hall, and will feature various faculty sessions that will discuss the latest research on a variety of topics.
