Appointments, honors and activities

Campus activities:

- The 2019 Data Science in Chemical Engineering Symposium will be held on Sept. 6 at Purdue University in the Forney Hall of Chemical Engineering’s Henson Atrium. During this event, symposium attendees will gain a broad understanding of data science and the importance of its application to chemical engineering, how the Davidson School of Chemical Engineering is integrating data science in its curriculum, and how students can get involved in this important field. Faculty and staff honors:

- David Rollock, professor and head of the Department of Psychological Sciences, recently received the Charles and Shirley Thomas Award from the American Psychological Association for his work in mentoring underrepresented students. Rollock was nominated by current and former graduate students.

- Marian Liu, assistant professor in the School of Nursing, recently received the Rosalie S. Wolf Memorial Award from the National Adult Protective Services Association (NAPSA). The award is given to a person for significant contribution to the knowledge and development in the fields of abuse of elders or persons with disabilities or adult protective services.

- The National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Midwest I-Corps Node, which includes Purdue University, received a $500,000 NSF award to enhance the methodologies for the recruitment and preparation of startups across the Midwest, as well as to develop a robust pre-screening and nomination process for teams to the national NSF I-Corps program. Associate professor Luna Lu in the Lyles School of Civil Engineering and clinical professor Matthew Lynall in the Krannert School of Management also received a $250,000 NSF Partnerships for Innovation – Technology Transfer award, which will enable the further development of thin film thermoelectric powered sensors to monitor remote and difficult-to-access pipelines. Additionally, Lynall and Norm Rapino, executive director of the Center of Innovation at the University of Toledo, received a $500,000 award from NSF to identify and plan collaborative efforts and joint initiatives between the 70 ADVANCE Institutional Transformation awardees, the 100 I-Corps Sites and 9 I-Corps Nodes to further the aims of both programs.  

- Zhenhua Zeng, a research scientist in the Davidson School of Chemical Engineering, has been selected to receive the 2019-20 Electrochemical Society Toyota Fellowship in recognition of his research in green energy technology. Zeng was one of only five recipients nationwide to receive this year’s fellowship awards. More information can be found here.

- Zoltan Nagy, a professor in the Davidson School of Chemical Engineering, has been selected to receive the 2019 American Institute of Chemical Engineers’ Pharmaceutical Discovery Development and Manufacturing Forum Award for Outstanding Contribution to QbD for Drug Substance in recognition of his field-leading advances in crystallization systems and drug product process intensification. - Brett Savoie, an assistant professor in the Davidson School of Chemical Engineering, has been selected to receive the Oak Ridge Associated Universities’ Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award. He will receive a one-year grant from ORAU to be matched by Purdue University. Savoie was one of only 36 faculty selected to receive the award, from almost 170 applicants nationwide. More information can be found here.

Notables:

-  The Purdue University Fire Department has received the Arthur G. Hansen Recognition Award, presented by the Purdue University Retirees Association and the Office of the President, for fostering a strong relationship with its retirees. The department was recognized June 27 at the annual Purdue retirement luncheon. The award is funded by TIAA and consists of a cash award of $2,500, a trophy and the addition of the name of the recipient on a permanent plaque in Purdue Memorial Union. The award is given in honor of Arthur G. Hansen, Purdue’s president from 1971 to 1982. 

Student honors:

- A team of students advised by ITaP research computing staff received a best student paper award at the 2019 Practice and Experience in Advanced Research Computing Conference. The paper focused on deploying an intrusion detection system on Purdue’s research network. More information can be found here.
