Board approves update to Engineering and Polytechnic Gateway project

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Purdue University Board of Trustees on Tuesday (July 2) authorized an updated schedule and additional project scope for the construction of the Engineering and Polytechnic Gateway on the West Lafayette campus and gave approval to plan, finance, construct and award construction contracts for the updated project.

The gateway project, which will replace the current Nuclear Engineering Building and Michael Golden Laboratories with a new facility to serve both the College of Engineering and the Purdue Polytechnic Institute, was originally planned to be delivered in two phases. A recent pledge of donor funding will allow both phases to commence as one project.

The building, offering a total of 255,000 gross square feet, will house primarily project-based instructional laboratories, design studios and collaborative spaces, and will help accommodate increased enrollment in both the College of Engineering and the Polytechnic Institute.

It also will serve as a new gateway to the academic campus and provide an eastern terminus to the Student Success Corridor, which runs along Third Street from Horticulture Park to Grant Street.

The gateway building will increase both the quality and quantity of instructional lab space for multiple academic departments, bring together labs that are currently geographically separated and provide more dedicated space for active learning and lab-centric instructional methods.

Construction is expected to commence in spring 2020 and be complete in fall 2022.
