LOS ANGELES — More than 400 Purdue University Global graduates took part in two commencement ceremonies on Thursday (Feb. 27) at the Skirball Cultural Center.
Degrees were awarded from the schools of Business, Education, Health Sciences, Information Technology, Nursing, Social and Behavioral Sciences and Concord Law School.
More than 100 of the graduates are California residents, while five live outside of the United States (Bermuda, Canada, Germany, Uganda and Zimbabwe). More than 75 graduates signed up to take part in the ceremonies virtually from all across the country.
Purdue Global Chancellor Betty Vandenbosch recognized the graduates for their academic achievements and celebrated their successes.
“During your time at Purdue Global, you have strengthened your ability to learn,” Vandenbosch said. “Don’t let that strong and hard-working learning muscle atrophy. Whether in a formal setting or on your own, keep learning for the rest of your life.”
Vandenbosch noted that Purdue Global students are primarily adult learners and pointed to some of the ways that make them distinctive. Some 31% of the student body is affiliated with the military, including active duty, veterans and their family members. She also said that over 51% of Purdue Global students are the first in their family to pursue a higher education degree and that more than 65% have a child or other dependent.
Dolan Williams, a graduate of Purdue Global’s Concord Law School and a member of the Purdue Alumni Association Board of Directors, provided the keynote address.
Based in Indianapolis, Purdue Global expands Purdue University’s land-grant mission by providing access to higher education for millions of working adults, highly personalized to their needs and flexibly scheduled to fit their lives via online courses. Nearly 10,000 Purdue Global students are expected to earn degrees this year.
