WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – WellSource Nutraceuticals, a startup located in Purdue Research Park of Northwest Indiana, has created a nutritional supplement to help women in fertility programs.

Methyl-NX is designed to specifically address the unique design criteria to support in vitro fertilization and fertility programs. It was created to provide sufficient quantities of bioactive folate, essential B vitamins and omega-3.

“We methodically designed around and eliminated ingredients, excipients, and fillers known or suspected of eliciting an immunogenic response or adverse event during IVF/pregnancy: Non-GMO, gluten-free, casein-free, and magnesium stearate-free,” said Brett Dines, founder of WellSource Nutraceuticals and an alumnus of Purdue’s College of Pharmacy.

Methyl-NX is a nonprescription dietary supplement for use under the supervision of a physician for the clinical dietary management of women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant and is specifically formulated to meet the distinctive nutritional requirements for this condition. Methyl-NX is now available to the public through physicians and/or individuals and/or companies that are licensed to distribute. It contains some or all of the following:

* L-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate (L-methylfolate calcium)

L-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate is the bioactive form of folate, an essential micronutrient, that

is a critical co-factor for the primary prevention of neural tube defects. Public health

authorities recommend women of childbearing age to take 400 micrograms of folic acid per day

at least four weeks before conception and during the first trimester.

* Methylcobalamin (vitamin B12)

Methylcobalamin is important for the brain and nervous system development and for the

production of red blood cells. When combined with folic acid during pregnancy, B12 can

help prevent spina bifida and other birth defects of the spinal and central nervous system.

* Algae-S oil (Schizochytrium)

Algae-S oil contains oil rich in highly unsaturated fatty acids and is used as a source of

omega-3 fatty acids. Two of the most important omega-3 fatty acids contained in algae-S

oil are docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). DHA is critical to

fetal and infant central nervous system growth and development.

“My Purdue pharmacy education helps me leverage formulation science and current good manufacturing practice, or cGMP, regulations to remove components known to be detrimental to IVF/fertility and produce this type of novel product,” Dines said.
