Appointments, honors and activities
- Rodrigo Bañuelos, professor of mathematics has received the 2022 American Mathematical Society Award for Distinguished Public Service. Presented every two years, this award recognizes a research mathematician who has made recent or sustained distinguished contributions to the mathematics profession through public service. Bañuelos is to be honored and recognized for his exceptional service to the profession, extensive educational and professional mentoring, and prolific activities that have advanced diversity, equity and inclusion at all levels of the mathematical sciences community. - Sara Schmitt, associate professor of human development and family studies, is the recipient of the Society for the Study of Human Development 2021 Early Career Award. This award is designed to honor an early career scholar whose work has made a significant contribution to the understanding of significant and critical aspects of human development.
- Monica Kasting, assistant professor of public health, is the recipient of the Early Career Award from the Public Health Education and Health Promotion section of the American Public Health Association. This award recognizes early career scholars who have made outstanding and promising contributions to the practice and profession of health education, health promotion, and/or health communication.
- Randy Roberts, 150th Anniversary professor and distinguished professor of history, has recently been inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, West Shore Chapter. The Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame honors area greats and endeavors to include athletes, administrators, coaches, officials, sports medicine, and sports media personnel.
Additionally, Roberts’ co-authored book, War Fever, won the 2021 Larry Ritter Award for Best Book in the Deadball Era from the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). The Larry Ritter Award is granted annually by SABR’s Deadball Era Committee to the author(s) of the best book about baseball between 1901 and 1919.
- Stewart Chang Alexander, associate professor of public health, is the recipient of the 2021 George L. Engel Award. Presented annually by the Academy of Communication in Healthcare, this award recognizes outstanding research contributing to the theory, practice and teaching of effective health care communication and related skills.
- Roberto Gallardo, director of the Purdue Center for Regional Development, has been selected by Indiana’s Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) to assist with its Next Level Connections Broadband Grant programs. Gallardo will be responsible for leading and guiding the suite of rural broadband funding allocations and programming, including all issues relating to program delivery, risk management, compliance oversight, trainings and policies, partnerships, ethical obligations and fiscal integrity. Gallardo will join the program on a contractual basis and will continue his work at Purdue.
