  • Student honors:

- A team of four IUPUI biomedical engineering students won a prize from the National Institutes of Health at the 2022 Design by Biomedical Undergraduate Teams (DEBUT) Challenge. Hosted by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Engineering and Venturewell, the event tasks undergraduate student teams to develop technology solutions for unmet needs in the health care industry. Team members Joseph Bustamante, Nathaniel Chesterson, Haley Gill and Katelyn Murphy were awarded for their development of HappyHeart, a handheld, 3D-printed pediatric heart rhythm monitor that can be used in low-resource clinics for preemptive heart screenings. The team was one of nine winners in a pool of 73 applications from 43 different universities. Before applying for the DEBUT Challenge, the team won grand prize and audience choice awards at the IUPUI JagStart 2022 campus competition, a showcase that helps students develop creative ideas. All four team members graduated this past spring with bachelor’s degrees in biomedical engineering.
