Marina Haworth-Snow received a Gilman Scholarship to go to South Korea. Korean language, history, and culture has long fascinated her.  The chance to go to Korea on the exchange program to Yonsei University in Seoul was too good to pass up. Her classes provide a chance to learn more about the history and diversity of Asia and participate in full-immersion language study. She looks forward to how the language study will increase her ability to connect with the people she will meet during her study abroad as well as her future clients.

Service has long been important to Marina. She volunteered with the local food bank, and her experiences there solidified her decision to continue working towards providing quality access to healthcare for all groups of people. As an aspiring healthcare professional, she seeks to prepare herself to better serve her future clients by intentionally placing herself in new situations that expand her empathy and global perspective.

Study abroad was not on most of her peers’ minds as they went through grade school together. For this reason, Marina seeks to change this mindset through her follow-on project. She plans to write an article about her study abroad experiences for her local and school newspapers to encourage the next generation to keep dreaming beyond their community.
