Kylie Helming was awarded the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad in Cambodia on the Elephants of the Cambodian Highlands program. The opportunity to study Asian elephants, learn about the Bunong people, and work in environment outside of the U.S. enhances her understanding of her chosen field. As an aspiring exotic animal veterinarian, she looks forward to gaining the experience necessary to solidify her career path and learn where she can continue to grow.
Beyond school, Kylie demonstrates resilience and drive. From working in a plant nursery to swimming competitively, she has adapted and succeeded. Being in Cambodia is another challenge that she is ready to meet.
Kylie plans to complete her follow-on project through partnering with the Purdue Promise program. By presenting about Bunong culture on study abroad day in the freshmen class, she will be able to share about her experience, the possibilities Gilman can provide, and increase the students’ cultural awareness.
