Offered the Gilman Scholarship, Vivian Hurn fulfilled this mission by seeking not only to enhance her Japanese major through study abroad in Nagoya, Japan, but also to equip herself to pursue a dream of attending graduate school at Kyoto University.

Motivated by a desire to participate in community service, Vivian planned to use her existing Japanese connections in the Red Cross to organize a follow-on project in her hometown of Southside, Tennessee. Indeed, the friendships she has established with Japanese people who live in Montgomery County serve likewise as part inspiration for Vivian to create this opportunity.
