Established in 2001, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is committed to sending American students of limited financial means from all backgrounds to study abroad.
Haley Arthur is keenly aware of how communication shapes human relationships and study abroad enhances professional development in the field of speech-language pathology, specifically through the lens of intercultural communication. Pursuing a minor in Human Development and Family Sciences, Haley selected a Health and Human Sciences Maymester program that provides a window into many parts of Greece, including Athens, Delphi, Meteora, Mykonos, Nafplion, Olympia, Santorini, and Paros. Motivated to learn basic Greek in anticipation of engaging in community, Haley is curious to exchange perspectives on how Greek family structures influence child development. This Boilermaker is eager to succeed abroad with the skills she has acquired through the service and leadership experience of 4-H, substitute teaching, and umpiring while growing up in the rural community of Greenfield, Indiana. With plans to present a follow-on project to health-related majors at Purdue, she notes, “I aim to break down misconceptions and highlight the significant academic and professional benefits of international study.”
