Recipient of the 2022 Goldwater Scholarship and 2022 Astronaut Scholarship, Ethan Brady is recognized for a promising career in mathematics. In his pursuit of this long-held dream, Ethan has used analysis and simulation to provide a deeper understanding of physical and biological phenomena from modeling freshwater mussels with an ecologist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to exploring applications of dynamical systems through NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates at North Carolina State University.

Growing up in the scientific town of Oak Ridge, Ethan gained early access to scientific mentors through his high school computer science club and senior research class. Today, he seeks to emulate his Purdue faculty mentor and professor of mathematics, Uli Walther, whose guidance and support was crucial for an advanced undergraduate student to navigate graduate level topics and highly competitive scholarships. In fact, Ethan was recognized for his advanced performance by the Department of Mathematics with the 2021 Outstanding Sophomore Award.

Ethan’s interest in helping others reaches across campus and into the community. Since his freshman year, he has been involved with the Winterization service project, which included helping to organize 1,600 volunteers last year to rake leaves at 320 local homes.
