Established in 2001, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is committed to sending American students of limited financial means from all backgrounds to study abroad.
Full immersion describes more than a study abroad experience for Elizabeth Farrell; it describes how she sees herself living and working in the world. Aspiring to become a doctor who understands the complexities of medicine in the larger context of humanity, Elizabeth was awarded the Gilman Scholarship to enroll in a Health Studies program in Santiago, Chile. Building on what she has accomplished at Purdue, including a minor in Spanish for the Professions, Elizabeth will gain a global perspective from clinical observation in a variety of settings throughout the Chilean healthcare system. In addition to taking a health studies seminar and Spanish for medical professionals, Elizabeth will test her communication skills and academic training by engaging with patients and professionals in fields from primary care to specialized care. Eager to find opportunities for personal growth as well, Elizabeth looks forward to enriching her Ecuadorian American perspective on life in Indiana with access to the culture and history of Chile, the public transportation of Santiago, and hiking in the Andes. As a mentor for the Emerging Leaders Science Scholars (ELSS) program at Purdue, Elizabeth knew immediately how to reach other students with her follow-on project by presenting at a summer series for incoming ELSS freshmen.
