Established in 2001, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is committed to sending American students of limited financial means from all backgrounds to study abroad.
Aspiring to work for a global company where he can connect with people across borders, Brogan Holt was awarded the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad in Taiwan. His interest in study abroad not only compliments his academic training as an Integrated Business and Engineering major, but also fulfils a long-held dream of visiting Taiwan. Recalling how his high school Mandarin teacher piqued his curiosity about the language and culture of Taiwan, and then, a high school trip was cancelled due to the pandemic, Brogan was motivated to apply to the Gilman Scholarship. Fast forward two years and Brogan will make that long awaited journey while participating in one of Purdue’s Maymester programs. Hosted by the National Taiwan Normal University, Brogan will expand his knowledge of Business Chinese and global teamwork from the perspective of East Asian corporate culture, which he notes is important to his future career aspirations: “The reason I care so much about learning Mandarin and specifically going to Taiwan is because I hope to work there one day.”
