Established in 2001, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is committed to sending American students of limited financial means from all backgrounds to study abroad.
Among her career aspirations, Kendall Lutz sees herself working towards sustainable energy solutions at a global company with a presence in Singapore. Awarded the Gilman Scholarship, Kendall was drawn to the opportunity in a Maymester program to study bioinspired materials and structures. At Purdue’s John Martinson Honors College, Kendall discovered that her strengths for design and problem solving in engineering are rooted in her artistic abilities and has cultivated a habit of mind that integrates information across disciplines when observing the world around her. In Singapore, Kendall seeks the inspiration of being immersed in this environment and notes how she will explore “the Singapore ArtScience Museum which has architecture designed to resemble a lotus flower. What really excites me about the building is its innovative use of biomimicry: the 'petals' of the lotus aren’t just beautiful, they also collect rainwater that is recycled for the museum’s use.”
