Established in 2001, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is committed to sending American students of limited financial means from all backgrounds to study abroad.
Aspiring to be a women’s health nurse practitioner, Sierra Pritchett was awarded the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad in Costa Rica. Seeking a global perspective on public health, Sierra chose a Maymester program led by Purdue faculty to gain exposure to a completely different healthcare system, cultural practices, and health challenges. While examining public health initiatives through the lens of a universal healthcare system, Sierra will observe firsthand how social, economic, and cultural factors impact community well-being. Eager to engage in community, Sierra will live with a host family, visit healthcare organizations, and participate in service-learning. In addition to completing a minor in Child Psychology, Sierra brings a strong sense of empathy from overcoming her own health challenges to building meaningful relationships with young and old, both here and abroad. “By combining personal storytelling, professional insights, and practical resources,” Sierra notes, “my Follow-on Service Project will increase awareness of study abroad, highlight the impact of the Gilman Scholarship, and empower students to pursue global learning opportunities that align with their academic and career goals.”
