Established in 2001, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is committed to sending American students of limited financial means from all backgrounds to study abroad.

Seeking a well-rounded experience through school, internships, and study abroad, Joycee Redman plans to make an informed decision in which part of the construction industry she will work - whether mechanical and electrical, Health Care, or Infrastructure. Awarded the Gilman-McCain Scholarship for study abroad at the Technological University of Dublin, Joycee will gain insight into how Ireland is developing construction methods, contract delivery systems, safety cultures, and project procedures. With the knowledge that several U.S. construction companies are expanding into foreign markets, Joycee is motivated by the desire to stand out among her peers with this international experience. Among the benefits of learning about another culture, Joycee notes that this study abroad group of students will learn common Irish phrases and vocabulary prior to departure. She looks forward to both the reflective learning that she will gain through the requirement to keep a daily journal and the opportunity to engage in community: “Another way I plan to build meaningful relationships with our host country is to ask questions. In my experience,” she notes, “even small questions about the things I see of how something works can be a gateway into a longer conversation.”
