Established in 2001, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is committed to sending American students of limited financial means from all backgrounds to study abroad.

 

Mara Schrock seeks to inform her career aspirations to study civil engineering and architecture by participating in the Engineering in the Southern Cone program. A native of Goshen, Indiana, Mara learned to appreciate her surroundings through the beautiful architecture, rich culture, talented musicians, delicious food, scenic forested trails, and vibrant downtown. Eager to explore the world as a Boilermaker, Mara seized the opportunity not only to be active outdoors, including hiking and sailing in Patagonia, but also to work on an interdisciplinary engineering project and engage with students from Universidad Tecnológica Nacional, Instituto Tecnológico de Buenos Aires, and Instituto Balseiro. With a digital camera in hand, Mara will journal this experience through photography with the intention of creating and displaying an exhibit at the local public library in Goshen. Collaborating with the Goshen Boys and Girls Club, Mara will invite this audience to learn more about Argentina and the Gilman Scholarship by offering a follow-on project around this exhibit entitled, “Harmonious Constructs: Nature and Engineering in the Southern Cone,”
