AI workshops to assist faculty with using the technology to save time, enhance learning continue this fall

Purdue Teaching and Learning Technologies has launched AI Bytes, a new initiative aimed at empowering instructors with the latest generative AI technologies and how it can help save them time in their instruction.

This series of one-hour sessions is designed to provide hands-on learning opportunities focused on the practical applications of AI tools in the classroom. The sessions are specifically tailored to help instructors integrate generative AI tools into their curriculum, emphasizing time-saving strategies and enhancing the learning experience for students across diverse disciplines.

Feedback from early participants has been positive. “I went from knowing nothing to being able to use the tool immediately. Wow. That is a good workshop. I especially appreciate the small groups and the individual attention. At this time, I know enough to be dangerous. So, I will be attending all the rest of the workshops this semester,” said by Susan Holladay, director of undergraduate laboratories in the Borch Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology.

The upcoming workshops will cover topics such as using preselected resources, generating assessments, grading, creating educational images, and using AI-enhanced collaborative tools. Each session features breakout rooms, providing instructors with hands-on opportunities to explore the tools, with facilitators available to guide them and answer questions.

Prasad Bingi, chair and associate professor of Management Information Systems, echoed the enthusiasm exhibited after the first workshop: “It was well organized. The presenters were knowledgeable and answered all our questions. The hands-on breakout room was excellent.”

These workshops offer an opportunity for instructors to stay ahead in the rapidly evolving field of AI and bring cutting-edge technology into their classrooms. The most up-to-date information about these sessions, along with registration and recordings from past sessions, can be found on the AI Bytes website.
