Veo Bicycles and Scooters
Purdue University partnered with Veo, a micromobility company, in spring 2023 to provide rental electric bicycles and scooters to the West Lafayette campus community.
A mixed fleet with hundreds of devices is generally available for use between March and December when weather is more favorable.
Get Started
To use one of the electric scooters, an individual must download the Veo – Shared Electric Vehicles app (Google Play / App Store) on their smart phone and set up an account, including payment information.
Users will need to take a short quiz through the Veo app upon initiating a rental for the first time and again following the start of each semester. The quiz includes a few questions to promote safety awareness and good behaviors among riders.
Subscriptions with discounted rides are available for frequent users. Individuals can learn more and sign up through the menu in the Veo app.
Rules, Regulations and Safety
Electric scooters and bicycles are classified as electric or motor-powered vehicles (EMPVs), which are covered in section 5 of Purdue’s Traffic and Parking Regulations (PDF). Operators are strongly encouraged to wear a helmet and must follow all state, county, city and Purdue rules and regulations, summarized below.
- Ride on streets or designated bicycle and multi-use paths; do not ride on sidewalks.
- Observe stop signs and other traffic control signals.
- Observe the direction of travel on one-way streets.
- Obey applicable speed limits.
- The carrying of any other person is prohibited.
- The carrying of any article that prevents the operator from using both hands on the handlebars is prohibited.
- No more than two devices may be ridden next to each other.
- Park only in campus bicycle racks or on pads that are provided specifically for bicycle and EMPV use.
- No bicycles or EMPVs are to be parked or stored inside campus buildings.
Parking and Ending Rides
To end a ride, the device must be placed in an approved parking location with a photo uploaded into the app. The parking assistant in the Veo app will use AI to provide instant feedback about the parking and whether adjustments are needed before the ride can end.
A map of approved parking locations is included in the Veo app. The app will reflect any temporary or permanent adjustments to ride zones and/or parking zones.
If users experience discrepancies between the parking locations identified through the app and physical bike racks or designated Veo parking areas, they should park according to the app location to end the ride and notify parking@purdue.edu of the issue so it can be resolved.
