Ahead of Purdue University in Indianapolis opening in July, Frank Robinson has been named the new director of advising. He will serve students, faculty and staff while spearheading academic advising programs at the Indianapolis location.
“I see a lot of opportunity in the midst of change,” Robinson enthuses. “There's a lot of excitement about starting something innovative in Indy.”
While he is new to Purdue, Robinson says he isn’t new to leading and supporting programs undergoing major changes. He previously worked in residence life at Lewis University, transfer admissions at Anderson University and most recently as the director of Northern Kentucky University’s First Year Student Success Hub.
“I am excited to join the Purdue community,” Robinson shares. “My experience navigating drastic change while working collectively with advisors from different disciplines has made me a better collaborator, and I am eager to bring that spirit to Purdue.”
Robinson’s work providing personalized help to first-year students at Northern Kentucky University gave him the chance to learn about different programs and collaborate with various advisors from multiple departments. Now, at Purdue in Indianapolis, he sees a similar need for cross-departmental collaboration.
“When advisors work together, they can learn from each other and explore different majors and programs, making them more versatile,” Robinson explains. “They can also notice potential roadblocks faster.”
One way Robinson and his team of advisors help avoid potential roadblocks is by providing tailored guidance to each student, understanding their unique needs and goals.
For many students transitioning from IUPUI, the guidance required is figuring out what academic changes need to be made to ensure they stay on track, whether that be adding courses or changing majors.
“It’s our goal to listen to students and meet them where they’re at,” Robinson explains. “Whether they are in their second year, near graduation or just starting, we want students to feel supported.”
As the Indianapolis location prepares to open its doors, Robinson and his team are ready to provide a Boilermaker academic experience while addressing the distinct needs of a diverse student body.
