The challenge. ME undergraduates are sometimes interested in research, but they often don’t know what opportunities are available, or how to approach faculty about them. The current system is ad hoc and messy. Accessibility to information appears to be a key barrier to UG student engagement in research. A variety of match-making approaches and opportunities could enhance participation in undergraduate research, as could more deliberate efforts to attract funds for REU programs or SURF expansion. Solutions could also include an online match-making process, a research project clearinghouse, laboratory open houses, and other possible avenues.

The Outcome. Students have a structured way for students to learn about, apply for, and participate in research projects. Faculty have an effective way to prepare students for research experiences and to identify students with the appropriate skills to pursue research projects.

An Example Success Metric. Double the rate of UG research participation in three years.

Pathfinder 1: Design and launch a web hub that presents faculty research to students.

Pathfinder 2: Expand research experiences within existing lab courses.
