Description: | This course, the second of a four-course sequence on the history of modern Europe, will focus on the major themes of the era 1789-1850; the French Revolution, the ascendancy of France in Europe, and the reaction to that hegemony; the beginning of machine industry, and the social, political, and ideological consequences; the widespread revolutions of 1848. The careers of outstanding and influential individuals, as well as social movements and their interaction with those individuals, will be examined. Attention will also be paid to the continuity of historical development by relating these themes to earlier stages in the growth of European civilization. |
