| Description: | Eukaryotic microbes are a heterogeneous group of organisms that range from the relatively "simple" unicellular forms to more complex forms that differentiate a variety of cell types and elaborate multicellular structures. The easily manipulated life cycles of these organisms have made several of them favorite tools of geneticists, biochemists, and cell biologists. This course seeks to introduce students to the biology of several "model" organisms. Emphasis will be placed on the use of genetic analysis in studying these organisms, and where applicable, parallels will be drawn between these organisms and their larger eukaryotic relatives. The course will consist of four parts: genetics systems, growth and metabolic regulation, cell biology, and development. |
