A didactic course focusing on basic principles of animal research, including basic tenets of anesthesia, analgesia, euthanasia, surgery, and handling of various species of laboratory animals; introduction to experimental design and hypothesis testing, overview of regulatory aspects of animal experimentation, including provisions of the Animal Welfare Act, the NIH Guide to the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and other applicable regulations governing the use of animals, discussion of organizations that support animal experimentation and those opposed to animal research.
