Description: Heat conduction and mass diffusion in solids, liquids, and gases; phenomenological laws and their physical basis in terms of thermodynamic nonequilibrium; use of chemical potential to describe extent of nonequilibrium for both ideal and nonideal systems; predicted and measured values of transport properties; formulation of diffusion problems and their boundary conditions; solution by means of exact, approximate, and numerical methods; coupled heat and mass diffusion; thermal diffusion and diffusion-thermo phenomena; effects of chemical reactions; applications to selected problems. Offered in alternate years. Prerequisite: ME 31500.
