| Short Title: | Genomic Annotation |
| Description: | The aim of this course is to annotate the genome of Chromohalobacter salexigens, which is one of the most halophilic and halotolerant eubacteria known. The Joint Genome Institute of the DOE determined the genomic sequence of this organism and provided a preliminary computer annotation of the genes (http://genome.ornl.gov/microbial/csal/). The students will manually curate the annotation to check the assignments of open reading frames, operon organization, orthologs to genes in other organisms using web-based software and data bases. In this process, they will familiarize themselves with fundamental biological processes, such as catabolic and biosynthetic pathways, transcriptional control mechanisms, cell division proteins, determinants of halophilism, and genomic evolution. The students will be working in teams of three or four. In addition to regular class meetings, the students will be encouraged to pursue annotation projects on their own. Familiarity with computer skills is highly desired. |
