ENG W311 - Introduction To Creative Nonfiction

Effectivity: 01/10/2005 - Fall 2007 *** @ IU Technology Statewide
Credits: 3
Instructional Types: Lec
Usually Offered: fal spr sum
Short Title: Intro Creative Nonfict
Description: Our course this semester will be loosely in the form of a journey: from the observable external world of people and place, to the interior world of our own intellect and comprehension, and finally to the shadowy, perhaps elusive, world of memory. We will explore the landscape of creative nonfiction by five writing assignments: an essay about place; a profile of a person; a short written documentary piece; and an autobiographical essay (or, memoir); and, finally, a "short cut." We will look at different ways of constructing essays, the relationship between writer and subject, the tools and ethics of the nonfiction writer, the concept of "voice," and finally that thorny question of "truth." We will also spend time reading and discussing the works of established and emerging writers. And, we will "workshop" essays-in-progress in class.
