Description: Advanced study of selected problems in the politics of Communist countries. The course will focus on such issues as the nationalities problem, political dissent, and opposition in the USSR and other Communist countries, the role of elites and interest groups within the context of a single-party system, as well as specific functions of the ruling Communist Party, e.g., indoctrination, leadership, and recruitment. The place of Communist studies in political science.
