| Description: | This course will stress those political and social traits that make the region between the Potomac and Rio Grande rivers a cultural province conscious of its identity. After the American Revolution, there developed differences between the North and South so sharp as to constitute a southern way of life and a northern way of life. In offering this regional course, it will be necessary to focus on those differences which made the South a unique region and the interrelations between "the South" and the nation of which it was a part. Half of the course will deal with the major events in the South's history after the Civil War, especially dealing with industry, agriculture, and the rise and fall of Jim Crow. |
