Dr. Jie Sun earned his master’s degree in 2001 from the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine with a focus on parasitic diseases. He then earned a PhD in cell and molecular biology/immunology from the University of Pennsylvania in 2006 before continuing post-doctoral training in viral immunology at the University of Virginia.  Dr. Sun served as assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Indiana University School of Medicine before joining the Mayo Clinic in 2016 as associate professor and senior associate consultant in the Department of Medicine and Department of Immunology. Dr. Sun’s primary research goal is to develop novel ideas and methods for the induction of strong antiviral and anti-tumor immunity in the respiratory tract. His secondary goal is to target host immunological regulatory networks for the control of collateral tissue damage and the development of chronic sequelae after various respiratory insults.  Viral respiratory infections and lung cancer are great challenges for public health. Dr. Sun’s work has been improving the understanding of the disease pathogenesis in infection and cancer, and providing novel approaches to prevent and treat these diseases.
