Science Express The Purdue University College of Science delivers research-grade instruments and science equipment to high schools in central and northwest Indiana.
The Science Express program creates opportunities for teachers and students to learn the theory and practice associated with scientific instrumentation. Students have hands-on learning experiences with instruments used both in research laboratories today and other science equipment – equipment that may not be available in most high school science labs.
These experiences increase the students' and teachers' skills and understanding of modern scientific technology. Since 1991, Science Express has provided outreach to more than 450,000 students and trained more than 400 teachers.
Teacher Training
We provide one teacher training opportunity each summer on the Purdue University campus. The new teacher training generally takes 3 days to complete. Teachers are trained to use the instruments and develop experiments appropriate for the high school laboratories. Emphasis on real-world applications helps to demystify the instruments and link experiments to student experiences. The use of a variety of instruments provides a wide range of laboratory experiments and allows teachers to customize their science curriculum to fit the needs of their students.
Cost
The cost for the program is $500 per teacher per year with a maximum of $2000 per school.
